Old Sheldon Church Ruins

August 10th, 2009

This past weekend, we headed to South Carolina to meet up Chris’s family at a water park.  On the way back home we stopped at Old Sheldon Church near Beaufort, SC.  I had heard so much about the ruins of this church from my husband and had been wanting to stop and see it for years.  This time…we stopped!  We saw the sign for the turn-off and off we went.

The place is amazing.  I can imagine local photographers use it frequently for photo shoots.   The history and events that that place has seen was overwhelming to think about.  Wars, soldiers, births and baptisms, deaths and funerals, weddings, celebrations…DSCN1807

There were scattered gravestones throughout the grounds. I thought this one was really striking - the image engraved on it. The dates on all the gravestones ranged from 1700's to mid 1900s.

Chris said these windows used to have stained glass in them - must've been incredibly beautiful.

The kids enjoyed the water pump - again, COLD water. Amazing since it was so incredibly hot and muggy.
