Update on 101 in 1001

November 9th, 2009

I haven’t updated my 101 in 1001 list in a loooooong time so here goes…

3.  Complete the family video for 2006.  DONE.  Amazing, I know…

4.  Start and complete the family video for 2007.  STARTED.  Hopefully it won’t be 2011 by the time it’s done…

19.  We’ve gone to the zoo a couple more times.  It’s finally great weather for it.  Not too hot, not too cold, juuuuuust right.

23.  Going to have to come up with a new goal for this one since I’ve decided to nix the book project.  Ballroom dancing maybe?  Hmmm….

24.  We do have another trip planned for the spring.  It can’t come soon enough!

30.  Need a new goal for this one, too, since I’m going to nix the cake decorating plans.  Another class idea?  I’d love to take photography class but I’d have to get a decent camera first…

31.  We are almost there with the living room, front room and entertainment center remodels!

36.  Need a new goal since I feel called away from PPD  ministry…

37.  We took the kids for swimming lessons at the local university swim center and they loved, loved, loved it.  We’ll probably do it again either in the spring or summer.

54.  I did attend a Deeper Still conference, but unfortunately had to leave early due to a severe migraine.  *sigh*  Oh, well.

56.  We took the kids to see Dora the Explorer Live!  It’s a musical – so, hey, it qualifies!  :)

78.  We’ve gone on a couple more date nights.  Yea!

Any ideas for those new goals I need?

  • I made a couple more loaves of bread yesterday, this time spreading them with butter and cinnamon-sugar before rolling them and putting them in the loaf pans. Very delicious, but I think I added a little too much flour – they are just a little dry?
  • Loved this story about the Red Envelope Campaign, my friend Mindy sent me the link.
  • S went poopy in the potty all by herself today – meaning, without prompting!  Almost diaper free!!!!!!
  • G dressed himself, again without prompting, the other day and was so proud of himself.  He ran up to me grinning to show me.  Then he turns around and pulls down the back of his pants to show me his underwear, too.  “Underwear, too, Mommy!”
  • Teach son to always wear clean underwear, because you never now when you might have to go to the hospital – CHECK
  • These two have had us laughing so hard lately.  Never a dull moment, for sure.
  • After gradually switching over to this new healthy way of eating, I ate some Papa John’s last week.  Oh, boy, did I pay for it.  The cost was a migraine, and I should’ve just eaten cement for all the effect it had on my stomach.  Bleh.
  • The kids are watching a lot of The Wiggles lately.  As insane as it drives me, I’ll admit that a part of me loves it because it’s so stinkin’ cute to watch both of them singing and dancing to all the music.
  • Oddly enough, they always ask me to stop singing along.
  • And people wonder why I only play piano.
  • Well, wonder no more.
  • My blog is now on a new server.  Can I get a loud cheer?!  Golly, that company was horrible.  I lost count of how many times I had to contact them in the last two weeks.  It’s so much easier when Chris is my primary and only tech support.
  • On that note, my permalinks aren’t working quite as they should yet – so until my tech support team (aka my hubby) arrives home, if you click on a link to an older post, it might not work.
  • How about a Going for 101 in 1001 list update?  Because, of course, you want to know:
    • 22.  Adopt another Golden Retriever.  Do I check this as completed?  We adopted then had to return a Golden mix…and now I’m not so sure we’ll adopt another until the kids are older.  I’ll mark it as completed for now until we can ponder this some more…
    • 59.  I have started piano lessons with G.  It is slow going because he is a young four, but we’re having fun none-the-less.
    • 77.  I did research therapy dog training possibilities – looks like it would be such a rewarding ministry.  I would really like to do this someday.
    • 96.  I watched Amadeus, Academy Award Winner for Best Picture, 1985.  Great movie.  Can’t believe I hadn’t seen it before.

  • I made a dessert treat this week for us and I forgot the sugar.
  • On the plus side, it was cinnamon raisin biscuits with a powedered sugar glaze topping anyhow so it wasn’t such a terrible result after all.
  • I still want my brain back though.
  • We were finally able to upgrade both of our cell phones.  I am feeling so technologically hip.  Cool.  Wait…what word is used these days?
  • This phone also has its on tv service which is free for two months.  It’s neat but I really have no use for it so we’ll cancel it once the free term is up.  It is amazingly good quality – I was surprised.  If I were a business traveler, it would probably come in handy I suppose?
  • I wonder if the cell phone makers put these phones through toddler tests.  If phones can pass toddler tests, they are quality phones.  Our old phones were washed, tossed, and tumbled so many times we lost count and they still worked.  All thanks to our children, of course.
  • Allergy season is in full swing here and I’m feeling every bit of it.
  • Just to redeem myself from the cinnamon raisin biscuit disaster, I want you to know I successfully made homemade biscuits for biscuits and gravy last night.  They turned out beautifully.  Just so you know.  :)
  • I am reading John Piper’s Desiring God
  • Going for 101 in 1001 list update:
    • 41.  I know what I want in two of my front flower beds, weeds are pulled (mostly), beds cleaned out, and just need to go get plants and mulch!
    • 48.  I read The Taming of the Shrew and then watched the movie with Elizabeth Taylor.  Good stuff!
    • 96.  Watched West Side Story.  Classic.
    • 18.  Made a dessert for March.  Cinnamon Raisin Biscuits.  Yes, its the one I forgot the sugar for.
    • 40.  I have picked out my piece of music and now need to work on being disciplined enough to work on it every day.
    • 59.  I’ve bought the books to use with G.  Now to get started…

Shakes-who?

March 15th, 2009

As part of my Going for 101 in 1001 list, I have a goal to read one of Shakespeare’s plays and then watch an accompanying movie adaptation.  Through junior high and high school, we studied one Shakespeare play a year – whichever play was being performed that season at the local theater.  For living in a small town, it’s always impressed me that there was a great theater nearby.

Each play that we studied was interesting in its own right, but as a young student, sometimes it was a struggle to understand the language and plots and complexity of everything.  Then there was the added pressure that there would be essays and tests and some kind of analysis of intertwining themes that would make my head spin.  Sure does take the enjoyment out of a story, doesn’t it?

By setting this goal, I was curious to see if I could enjoy Shakespeare for enjoyment’s sake and understand the language and the storylines much easier as an adult.  Would I see things as humorous without cliff notes telling me it was funny?

My friend Mindy had a copy of The Taming of the Shrew so I borrowed it while Chris and the kids were at the grandparents house last weekend.  Fortunately, it was a copy that had little footnotes to explain words not common or not used at all in today’s language.   This adult sure did need them!

I was able to read it in one afternoon and evening and I must say, it is much easier from adult eyes and experiences than from junior high eyes and experiences.  Wow!  It was funny, too.  And oh my word – the humor was so infused with innuendos!  And I thought today’s entertainment was too risque.  They didn’t talk about that in junior high English class!

The fun part was then watching the play come to life in the movie starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton (?).  Certainly, it wasn’t entirely by the book with the play, but it mostly was.  I must say, she played a great shrew.

All in all, a fun goal to complete!  I just might check out A Midsummer Night’s Dream next.  I am not much for tragedies because life holds enough tragedies on its own, but comedies I like.

  • I am thoroughly engrossed in this blogsite today:  Cake Wrecks  I have an unexplainable urge to peruse local stores with my hidden camera and search for bad cakes.  It’s hilarious.  She also features excellent cakes once a week – oh, the talent.  And the lack thereof.  Even better, only professionals’ cakes allowed.  *giggle*  Amazing.
  • Why do I torture myself looking through the Pottery Barn catalogue?  :)  Hmmm…there are definitely great decorating ideas in there though and cheaper supplies can be found at other retailers.
  • Thomas the Train is now on instant Netflix.  Oh, Netflix, how much do I love thee?  (read:  It’s about time you got more shows on there that small children love!)
  • I can hardly contain my excitement!  Bob the Builder is there, too!
  • I started receiving the magazine bon appetit a couple of weeks ago as a free gift from Amazon.com when we purchased my Christmas gift in December.  Interesting stuff.
  • The most interesting:  there are vegetables in there I never knew existed!
  • Also, I shouldn’t look at the magazine while watching forensics drama shows (ie CSI).  Nor should I eat lunch at the same time.  Those shows seem to be get getting worse than horror movies these days.  Bleh.
  • Going for 101 in 1001 update:
    • 8. Completed reading through the Bible.
    • 78. Went to a Fireproof Marriage Conference at our church – considering it a date-night.
    • 55.  Added more Scripture memory verses.
    • 20.  and 34.  We’ve started growing herbs and veggies.  I’ve not done well keeping plants alive in the past, but it’s a new day, right?  The kids enjoyed planting the seeds.
